Title

‘Pahs’ content in infant formulae, follow-on formulae, and in baby junior foodstuffs in relation to the EU food law requirements

Abstract

The objective of this research was to determine the contamination of infant formulae, follow-on formulae and baby junior foodstuffs by PAHs: 4 compounds from the group of light PAHs listed by EPA and 15 compounds listed by The Scientific Committee on Food UE. The research material constituted commercially available infant formulae and follow-on formulae including infant milk and follow-on milk, and baby junior foodstuffs such as lunches and soups. The methodology applied consisted in extracting fat, isolating PAHs’ from the fatty matrix using a GPC gel permeation chromatography, and determining PAHs’, qualitatively and quantitatively, by a liquid chromatography with selective detectors (HPLC–FLD/DAD). In the group from infant formulae and follow-on formulae to the baby junior foodstuffs, similar quality profiles of PAHs were found. In the majority of the products analysed, 4 light PAHs constituted 100 % of the overall content of PAHs. The results obtained pointed out a very low content level of the compounds studied. Benzo[a]pyrene were detected only in two kinds of soups. With regard to the maximum allowable content limit of benzo[a]pyrene in the tested group of products (1 µg/kg), it was explicitly proved that the products analysed fully met the EU food law requirements.
