Title

Content of the B-group vitamins in the whole-day food rations of the gymnasium pupils

Abstract

The objective of the research was to assess the intake level of B-group vitamins (B1, B2, PP, B6, B12, and folic acid) by the gymnasium pupils in a locality of Łącko, and to identify a deficiency or an excess of those components in their diet. The pupils (33 girls and 19 boys), aged 16 to 18, were classified as a group of population having a moderate physical activity. On the basis of 416 interviews on the food rations during 24 hrs prior to the research, the assessment was performed of fulfilling the requirements for the B-group vitamins; the interviews were done on four selected weekdays, during the spring-summer and autumn-winter seasons in 2005/2006. The supply rate of B-group vitamins was assessed by comparing the number of supplies identified through the interviews and the respective values indicated in the relevant nutritional standard referring to the population researched. The results obtained point to the satisfactory supply level of the B-group vitamins in the group of pupils covered by this research. Among the components analysed, only the niacin (83-86% of the standard level) and the riboflavin (85% of the standard level during the autumn-winter season) were characterized by a too low supply rate. At the same time, it was shown that the following intake levels were appropriate: thiamine (during the autumn-winter season) and niacin in the group of girls; riboflavin (in the springsummer season) and pyridoxine in the group of the boys. The intake of all other vitamins, including folic acid, exceeded the recommended levels. The impact of a seasonal character of the intake was confirmed only with regard to the supply of B12.
