Title

Assessment of the content of folates and other B-group vitamins in the diets of young women (20-25 years old) from the małopolska region

Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the nourishing method for women aged 20 to 25 years. The research covered a group of young women from the Cracow neighbourhood; it was conducted during the autumn-spring (2005/2006). The research was conducted using a method of interviewing those women on their food intake during the last 24 hrs before the research. The poll was performed on 4 weekdays, totally 384 poll questionnaires were received. The food rations eaten by women polled did not meet the requirements for folates, nor for the majority of B-group vitamins. The intake of folic acid by women studied covered as little as the 74% of the required amount. Additionally, it was proved that the intake of thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, and vitamin Bwas low. Only the intake of vitamin B12 covered the recommended values. The seasonal character of supply of some products on the intake level was proved only with regard to some vitamins. The findings of this study confirm the necessity of taking actions aiming at changing the nutritional habits of young women.
