Title

Attempt to apply acoustic emission method to study grains of spring and winter wheat varieties

Abstract

The objective of the study was to assess the practical application of acoustic emission method to investigate the spring (Eta, Jasna) and winter (Kobra, Rysa) varieties of wheat grains. The uniaxial compression tests were carried out using a ‘ZWICK’ Universal Testing Machine; single grains were compressed with a speed of 10 mm/min. At the same time, while compressing the material, emitted sounds were recorded within a frequency range from 0.1 to 15 kHz. A high dispersion of acoustic descriptors values was found. The spring varieties of wheat were characterized by a lower number of events and a lower acoustic energy than the winter varieties. Each of the varieties investigated had a specific, individual spectrum. Prior to applying the acoustic emission method to investigate particular properties of grain, it is indispensable to generally evaluate the grain’s acoustic properties and to determine in what way they depend on many factors. Additionally, the measurements of the relevant parameters should be carried out under the similar conditions. The acoustic emission method can be applied to investigate the grain, but, then, it is indispensable to take very many measurements owing to the high diversity of grains within the same variety.
