Title

Antioxidant activity of highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.)

Abstract

Different cultivars of vaccinium corymbosum were analyzed with regard to their total content of polyphenolies, total content o f anthocyanins, ascorbic acid content, and antioxidant capacity. Cultivars of blueberry were harvested twice, the second harvest took place 26 days after the first one. A total antioxidant capacity of the studied berries ranged from a low 17.6 (Lateblue) to 61.8 (Earlyblue) μmol Trolox equivalents/g of the fresh berry. Generally, the fruits harvested earlier were larger except for the Bluecrop cultivar. The smaller fruits showed the highest contents of anthocyanins and polyphenols. The data obtained confirm indicate that blueberries are a rich source of antioxidants.
