Abstract
Background. Science has been developing since time immemorial. As a result of curiosity, observation or the desire to improve the standard of living, various techniques and methods used in every field of science have been created over the centuries, and are still being developed nowadays. This made it possible to develop biotechnology, and subsequently, bioengineering. Changes in industry start with laboratory works. The most important and most frequent methods and techniques used in laboratories, the history of their creation, their current applications and possible use in the future were discussed in the article. These methods and techniques concern various areas of life and involve interference in the lives of animals, such as crossbreeding, genetic transformations or manipulations carried out on material obtained from them.
Results and conclusions. Animal research makes it possible to improve the quality of human life, especially for patients. However, it should be remembered that animals are also sentient beings and cannot be overexploited. They must be provided with appropriate living conditions, ensuring animal welfare. The development and implementation of new legal regulations and the 3R principles, as well as the development of state-of-the-art cell and tissue culture technologies, allow for limiting the use of invasive procedures in animal research. It is impossible to list and describe all important methods and techniques that are currently, or will be, practiced and developed in the future. Science still has a lot to discover, develop and offer for practice.
