Title

Diet supplementation with vitamins and/or minerals among the university students in the region of Małopolska

Abstract

The objective of the study was to assess the commonness and frequency of supplementing the diet with vitamin and/or vitamin-mineral preparations among the students of six Cracow universities. The survey covered a group of 450 women and 293 men aged 19 to 28 and was conducted during the summer-autumn and winter-spring seasons (2007/2008). The majority of students declared to regularly (11-26% of the students from individual universities) or occasionally (38-50%) supplement their diet with vitamin and/or vitamin-mineral preparations. About one/third of the students polled (29-36%) didn’t improve their daily diet with any vitamins and mineral supplements. It was evidenced that relatively more women than men (P < 0,05) added supplements to their daily diets. The most frequently used preparations among the respondents were sets of vitamins and minerals; the students polled used to apply them specifically during an illness.
