Title

Changes in daily supply of basic groups of food products in households of pensioners in the years from 1989 to 2004

Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the changes in daily supply of basic groups of food products in households of pensioners during a sixteen year period from 1989 to 2004, i.e. at the beginning and stabilization of the market economy in Poland. The research material included data from Statistical Yearbooks published from 1990 to 2005 by GUS (Central Statistical Office), Sections “Households Budgets”. The data studied referred to the supply of cereals, milk and dairy products, meat and meet products, fish and fish products, butter and cream, eggs, other fats, potatoes, fruit, vegetables and legume, and sugar & sweets. The process of market economy stabilization in Poland caused many positive and negative changes in the supply of food product groups. Amidst the positive changes, there are: essential decrease in the supply of butter (50 %) and sugar (28 %), and a simultaneous increase in the supply of fruit (25 %) whereas the negative changes involve a considerable decrease in the supply of milk and dairy products (44 %), total cereals (20 %), and of potatoes (33 %). During the period studied, the supply of meat and meat products highly fluctuated as did the supply of fish and fish products. Generally, the supply of meat had an increasing tendency while the supply of fish – a decreasing tendency.
