Title

Effect of genetically modified soybean and ‘’00’’ rapeseed meals on pig fattening performance and technological and sensory properties of pig meat

Abstract

The objective of the study was to determine the effect of genetically modified (GM) soybean meal and ‘’00’’ rapeseed meal, contained in finisher diets, on the pig fattening performance, carcass quality, and technological and sensory properties of pork meat. The feeding experiment was performed on 24 hybrid finishing pigs [(♀Polish Large White x Polish Landrace) x ♂ Duroc] divided into two experimental groups. The animals were fed complete finisher diets: S diet containing GM soybean meal and S+R diet, in which 50% of the protein from a GM soybean meal was replaced with a protein from rapeseed meal. Pigs were fattened from 65 kg BW to 115 kg BW. Determined were the following: daily gains, feed conversion, carcass quality traits, technological, and sensory properties of loin (m. longissimus dorsi) and ham (m. semimembranosus). Based on the results of the experiments conducted, it was found that as for the fatteners receiving GM soybean meal, the daily gains were by 4.7% higher and the conversion rate of the fed meal was by 4.8% better compared to the fatteners fed a mix with 50% of the protein from a GM soybean meal replaced with a protein from rapeseed meal. With respect to the carcass quality parameters, the technological properties (except for the colour attributes of m. longissimus dorsi), and the sensory properties of pork meat, no statistically significant differences were reported to depend on the type of plant protein applied in the fatteners’ diet.
