Title

Effect of packaging on durability of pasteurized milk

Abstract

One of the more important factors determining safety and durability of milk is its packaging. Presently, containers of plastics and laminates made of plastics, paperboard, and aluminum foil are used as packages for milk. Multilayered paperboard packages guarantee the best quality of milk. In order to achieve a similar effect when using containers of plastics, it is necessary to apply oxygen- and light- barrier materials, for example with the addition of dyes or of UV absorbing substances. A selected packaging material for milk containers should ensure that milk is properly protected by its packaging and that ecological aspects of the selected packaging are taken into consideration.
