Eating habits of students of the university of life sciences in Lublin using alternative diets

Abstract

Alternative diets become more popular among students, who are susceptible to on any kind of news, including feeding patterns. Incorrectly used alternative diet can cause deficiency of nutrients in organism, formation of incorrect eating habits and increased risk of civilization diseases. The aim of the study was the assessment of the eating habits of students using alternative diets based on the frequency of some foodstuffs consumption. The study was conducted, using questionnaire methods, among 253 students at the University of Life Sciences in Lublin, in the period from November 2007 to February 2008. Questionnaire included questions concerning general characteristic of students, their eating habits, and usage of alternative diets. Generally women more often used the alternative diets than men. In group of women using these diets more rarely the overweight was occurred (11,1%), in comparison with men (37,5%). Students used mainly weight-reducing diets (52,3%) and reduced number of their meals. The respondents using the alternative diets consumed, the foodstuffs recommended in rational nutrition, more frequently.
