Title

Extraction techniques applied to LC-MS determination of pesticide residues in food

Abstract

A review is given of the most significant extraction techniques used to isolate pesticide residues in food that are, next, determined by a liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) method. The focus is exclusively on the methods, which make it possible to simultaneously analyse residue of multiple pesticides during one single determination run. The extraction techniques are discussed, which involve solvent extraction, solid-phase extraction, and membrane extraction as are the combined techniques such as QuEChERS, CHEMAC, and STEMIT. In the analysis of pesticides, one of the major issues is the optimization of the applied extraction technique combined with the process of cleaning up the extract. In the case the residues of many pesticides are simultaneously determined that have different physical-chemical characteristics, compromise solutions are applied, which enable to isolate as many compounds as possible. Medium polarity solvents are most frequently used; in the first place acetonitrile, methanol, and ethyl acetate. Of all the sorbent materials, the Oasis HLB and mixtures of PSA (Primary-Secondary Amine) and GCB (graphitized Carbon Black) are commonly applied. The porous (hollow) polypropylene membranes in the form of hollow fibres are most frequently used as membranes. In the paper, specifically highlighted was the application of a QuEChERS method to isolate pesticides from food samples.
