Title

Assessment of vegetarian and traditional diets and the nutritional status of children aged 1-3

Abstract

Consumption of energy and basic nutrients by children fed traditionally and those kept on a vegetarian diet was comparable, although the energy and nutrient sources were different. Both the types of diet were similarly deficient in vitamins B6 and PP, as well as in calcium and zinc. However, in the case of traditionally-fed children due to their too low consumption of fruits and vegetables, these deficiencies were greater and also included vitamins E, B1, and C, as well as phosphorus and iron. Body height and weight, the measures of appropriate nutrition at that phase of life, did not deviate from the norms, so it was difficult to use them for the evaluation of the diets.
